Process development is a key element in the creation of improved, more rapid and lower-cost methods for producing target products. Every strain or cell line exhibits a different behavior, meaning growth properties, nutritional requirements and expression levels can deviate significantly. Through evaluating feeding strategies, pH value optimization, and process automation, process engineers can optimize growth, stability, and productivity levels.
Here, we show how applying appropriate methods for reliable scaling can support the economical and efficient development of biotechnological products. We discuss different feeding principles and highlight the advantages and limitations of perfusion cultivation. Finally, we take a closer look at stem cell cultivation and explain how stem cell scientists can benefit from cultivating their cells in bioreactors.
